Widefield microscopes are particularly dedicated to temporal monitoring in vivo of the development of cells, embryos or complete organisms. Thanks to short exposure times, rapid illumination changes and optimised acquisition, they limit phototoxicity and preserve tissues over long periods. Equipped with regulation systems (temperature and CO2) and motorised stages for multi-positioning, they remain simple to use and, although their resolution on thick samples may sometimes require the use of confocal microscopy, manage to cover the majority of needs.
Slide scanners, meanwhile, are automated microscopy systems based on a widefield architecture and are therefore designed for the high-throughput digitisation of biological specimens. Historically rooted in brightfield hospital diagnostics, these scanners now incorporate fluorescence or polarisation to adapt to the demands of research, enabling automated, large-scale imaging ranging from histological sections to whole organisms.
